Help: Enable External Temperature Display in 2010 Fusion

Post by keeblerz28 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 7:20 am

New member here, first post.

I have a 2010 Fusion SE, 2.5 cyl, with SYNC and manual HVAC control. The radio screen includes the compass, but not the external temperature, but I can see in direct sunlight that the screen includes the area to provide external temperature. I know that the external temperature is displayed in Fusion SEL and Escape XLT models in similar model years. I have already installed the proper sensor (Dorman 902-021) in place of the dummy plug from the factory. Using FORScan, I can monitor the external temperature value from this sensor, so I can tell it is connected and working properly.

So my question is: Is there any way to modify the Hex values in any modules to enable the external temperature display?

In my searches on this topic on different forums, I've found an Escape owner that was able to achieve this result, but apparently had to replace the manual HVAC control unit from another vehicle that already had the feature enabled. http://www.escape-city.com/viewtopic.ph ... 10#p253072 I suspect it is a programmable variable. I can begin to pull as-built files by VIN for comparison with and without this feature if helpful.

Using FORScan 2.3.6 beta and ELM 1.5 modified with HS/MS switch, although open to other adapter suggestions.

Because a photograph is worth 1,000 words, this is an example of what it currently shown on the radio display:

And this is what I would like to see:

I don't recall where, but I read on a forum that Ford vehicles of this age range can be run through a "Sound Check" mode. This is done with the radio playing AM or FM, pressing and holding preset buttons "3" and "6" simultaneously for 3 seconds. Each speaker is tested individually for function. Also within this mode, if you interrupt the sound check and press any preset button 1-6, additional tests can be run. I didn't have a lot of time this morning to play around, but preset button "5" runs a display test that briefly enables all segments of the display:

Which tells me that my display is more than capable of showing the external temperature as soon as I can figure out how to enable it!

Research into the Wiring Diagrams, for similar Ford vehicles which include the outside air temperature enabled from the factory show the sensor is wired into the HVAC module, which I believe communicates the ambient temperature over MS-CAN to the radio display:

The HVAC module shows up in the list of modules on the top information tab in ForScan. However, the HVAC module is not included in the Configuration and Programming side tab. This may have something to do with the HVAC module also not being listed in the As-built information. This is definitely why attempts at isolating this feature using as-built data thus far has not been successful.

Again, referencing to the Escape As-built configurations, I believe the HVAC module should be located at address 733. Second confirmation of HVAC address 733 from this document for 2011 Mustang.

In summary, I think I need to have access to change configuration on a module that does not show up in As-built or ForScan Configuration and Programming.

Any update on your progress on this? Looking to do the same on my 2011 Fusion. I also have a 2010 Escape which I got the external temperature working with Forscan, but no luck yet on the Fusion.

Thanks
