PATS programming for Mazda RX-8 with Smart Key system and RKE module

Post by FORScan »

The article is actual for Mazda cars that have Smart Key system. This video explains what it is and how it works. The issue was explored on Mazda RX-8 US 2008, but it is actual for any RX-8 for US or Japan market produced between 2003 and 2010, and Mazda 8/MPV produced between 2006 and 2013. We have had no chance to check it yet, but most likely it is also actual for other models of this 2005-2010 MY generation that have both PATS programming and RKE programming available in the RKE module (Mazda 3, CX-7, CX-9).

Keys in this system contain two components that are programmed separately: PATS transponder and keyless transmitter. FORScan has two functions for it:

Here are right sequence of actions to program PATS:

Use case A. Add new key to the PATS memory, old keys have not been removed
1. Run and complete PATS programming -> Ignition Key Programming function. It will program PATS transponder in your key, so you will be able to run the engine using the key blade (like you do when the key battery has been discharged).
2. Run and complete Remote Keyless Entry and Start programming->Passive Key Programming function. It will program the keyless part so you will be able to open the door with it.
3. Run and complete Remote Keyless Entry and Start programming->Initialise Steering Column Lock function. It will program keyless part to the column lock so you will be able to start the engine with the ignition switch without the mechanical key.

Use case B. Erase old keys and program two new keys
Important note: after you have erased old keys, you must program at least two keys, otherwise PATS will not allow to start the engine.
1. Erase PATS keys using PATS programming -> Erase and program keys.
2. Erase RKE keys using Remote Keyless Entry and Start programming->Passive Keys Erase function.
3. Program two PATS keys using PATS programming -> Ignition Key Programming function function.
4. Program two RKE keys using Remote Keyless Entry and Start programming->Passive Key Programming function.
5. Initialize new RKE keys using Remote Keyless Entry and Start programming->Initialise Steering Column Lock function.

Use case C. PCM replacement
Note: PCM is participated in PATS as an auxiliary module, so it is NOT necessary to reprogram keys.
1. Pair PCM with RKE using PATS programming -> Module Initialization function.

Use case D. RKE replacement or RKE+PCM replacement
1. Erase and program keys as explained in Use case B.
2. Pair PCM with RKE as explained in Use case C.
