Anybody using ABS features for brake bleeding?

Hello,

Anybody using FORScan successfully to actuate the ABS module while bleeding brakes on 2013-2016 Focus/Fiesta, and can report any particular issues or things they've noticed? Any caveats using certain adaptors with recent Fords?

I understand when a garage does an IDS ABS Service Bleed, they're able to actuate the ABS module's valves for bleeding the rear brakes, then same again for the fronts, and IDS guides them through it. I've not tried yet with FORScan (not in a position to bleed my brakes just yet) but I'm keen to know if anyone else has had success.

Just my comment and experience, I haven't used ForScan yet to actuate any ABS bleeds. However, I have bled brakes in the past without actually bleeding the ABS valves since I didn't have ForScan or any other tool to bleed the ABS module. I did use the following tool that allowed me to bleed without any helper and haven't had any issues with the vehicle brakes.

Hi, I always use forscan when bleeding brakes on fords from fiesta to kuga, it’s faster to use than ids.works well no problems,, I also use a pressure bleeder on the reservoir so not to run it empty ( 10 psi ),
Hope this helps

Thanks Greg, it does. Do you tend to go one wheel at once or do you do one axle at a time?

[edit] ran the ABS module bleed procedure twice (one for each front wheel), no issues. I did manage to run the car battery flat though, through a combination of leaving the ignition on for over an hour and possibly also the heater! (oops)

Worth making sure you have a means to start the car just in case - FORScan did give me the usual "low battery volts" warning before I started on the ABS bleed.

AIUI you need to have an OBD adapter compatible with HS- and MS-CAN. If you do, the ABS Service Bleed option will appear in the Service menu.

I bought this OBD adapter as it said it was STN1170 compatible (with MS-CAN support). Almost certainly a knockoff of a 'legit' adapter, but ended up working fine for me.

edit, May 2019: the dongle is no longer available from Amazon via that link, don't know why. The name of the product was "Dailyinshop ELS27 FORScan OBD2 USB Scanner Diagnostic Cable For Ford/Mazda/Lincoln/Mercury( Color:black)" and here's a photo of it:

SUPPORTS ALL OBD-II PROTOCOLS Yes
SUPPORTS SINGLE-WIRE CAN (GMLAN) Yes
SUPPORTS FORD MEDIUM-SPEED CAN (MS-CAN) Yes

I tried to use the brake bleeding feature, but there is no option for it.
Maybe the scantool is not able to do it? I double checked the specs:

Processor: Genuine ELM327
OBDII Protocols:
ISO15765-4 (CAN)
ISO14230-4 (Keyword Protocol 2000)
ISO9141-2
J1850 VPW
J1850 PWM

I bought this interface more than 3 years. Didn't start using Forscan until this year. I ordered a new compatible interface.
Thanks for the information.
