2001 F350 Misfire Counters
2001 F350 Misfire Counters
Hello -
Not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum. I have a 2001 F350 5.4 and it appears to have a bad coil. Pretty typical for one of these with coil on plug. And also pretty typical, it doesn't set a misfire code. I know higher end scanners can pick up individual misfire monitors.
I was using FORScan demo and it is able to identify that there is a misfire ... just not which cylinder is having the misfire.
Does the full version support individual cylinder misfire counters for this truck? I'm using it on Android with a bluetooth ELM327 scanner. Otherwise I will have to take an infrared temp gun and hit each exhaust port and see which one is coolest. Don't want to unplug the coils while it's doing it for fear of burning out a good coil or frying a coil driver in the computer.
Thanks!

Wasn't able to poke around in FORScan , but infrared thermometer found that cylinder 6 had a bad coil.
Re: 2001 F350 Misfire Counters
If demo version has no misfire counters, full version has no them as well. Not all PCMs support misfire counter PIDs.
Good tool for intermittent misfire diagnostic is OBD II Mode 6 tests. FORScan has Mode 6 implemented in version for WIndows only (for pre-CAN vehicles it is available, for CAN models it is implemented in v2.3.9 that is not released yet). Tests section will be added to FORScan Lite for iOS and Android) in one of nearest releases.
This is how it may look like for pre-CAN cars:
FORScan supports Ford-specific Mode 6 tests (Mazda has another set of specific tests that will be added in the future).

Curious, how does one access "mode 6"? Thanks!

Re: 2001 F350 Misfire Counters
Hi, I'm have a miss at low idle on my 2010 base Mustang, at above idle runs good. I do not have the CEL. So, I suspect a plug or wire is breaking down under load. I was hoping to use FORSCAN to help determine which cylinder. I see from this post this is not available yet on CAN vehicles, which mine is. I have FORSCAN version 2.3.18 beta Is the version to support this be available soon ? What exactly is mode 6 ? OBD of course is On Board Diagnostic Thanks for any feedback.FORScan wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:25 pmIf demo version has no misfire counters, full version has no them as well.
