2002 Focus ZX3 Zetec 2.0 can I force low and high speed cooling fans on?

Post by bdbaddog »

Greetings,

Great tool!
I'm wondering if I can tell the ECU to turn on and off the high and low speed cooling fans?
If so how? I couldn't find that PID when I chose control vs read.
Do I need an extended license to do so?

Thanks!

You need an extended license to "click" and control parameters.
The PID or parameter is dependent on: Year, Make and Model. Not all vehicles support all parameters.
Post your results with screen images.

I got the trial extended license and reran.
(Assuming the available PIDs should show up when the car is in run mode, but not running?)
See relevant items for read and control below

Would different ODB2 readers yield different items which can be controlled?
I'm using the Veepeak ODBCheck BLE (which works with pc, android, ios)

OBD 2 "readers" do not have bi-directional control, FORScan does however if the function is built into the hardware and software.
Click the dropdown arrow from Read to Control and send that specific PID to the right side with the right arrow.
Click the play arrow and test the fans.

When I switch to control (see previously linked screenshots), the fan's no longer appear in the list of available PIDS.

If I use a different ODB2 bluetooth or cable, would that enable more PIDS for control?

So if I purchase this: https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlin ... ef=forscan instead of using the Veepeak Bluetooth odb2 reader?

The OBDLink EX is a very good quality cable and much more superior than veekpeak.
veeppeak was never designed and will not work correctly with FORScan.
OBD 2 software was designed and mainly targets the engine controller.
FORScan software is different and targets all the installed controllers on the High Speed, Medium Speed, ISO and PWM networks.
FORScan however does have problems with the UBP network and OBD 2 will never read the UBP network.
"Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART )- Based Protocol (UBP) Communications Network."

OBDLink EX is able to automatically switch protocols and networks.
Once again, not all protocols or bi-directional controls can be accessed if the manufacturer didn't implement them.
That Focus likely has bi-directional control in most control modules. You need to experiment with your model.
If you do purchase the OBDLink EX, make sure the correct drivers are downloaded from the support site and update the firmware.
With any experiments, keep the battery voltage maintained and save copies of all tests and changes.
Find a wiring schematic to fit your model.

KOEO self test should cycle the fans on during the test
