I successfully have Forscan running on 10.13.6 (2018 MBP) using VirtualBox with Windows 10 Home unactivated and a USB ELMconfig device with MS/HS switch. It took a bit of playing around to get Windows to recognize the USB device. Here are the steps I took (best I can remember) that worked:

1. Install Mac OS X FTDI driver 2.4.2 (http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm)
2. Install VirtualBox Extension Pack in OS X (http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm)
3. Plug ELM device into USB port (with USB-C dongle), but don't attach to vehicle
4. Enable USB 3.0 and the FTDI FT232R USB UART [0600] device in VirtualBox port settings for the Windows 10 VM
5. Install Windows FTDI driver using setup.exe package (http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm)
6. Restart Windows 10 VM (may not be necessary, but why not)
7. Attach ELM device to vehicle
8. Run Forscan on the VM
9. Cross fingers and hope it all works!
