2017 XLT F150 Trailer Brake Controller Activation

Post by mlalberts » Wed May 17, 2017 12:40 pm

I have a 2017 F150 XLT which didn't come with the trailer brake controller. I purchased the OEM controller and installed it a while back but haven't been able activate it in Forscan. I bought the ELM3727 blue tooth with the MSCan switch and was able to see the TRM Module with the As Built. It only gives me tow lines. 791-01-01-C000-005A and 791-02-01-009B. Does any one know if these are for the trailer brake controller?

From the videos I've seen, the Trailer Brake Control Gain Settings must be enabled. This is found in the IPC module. I too, am attempting to activate the TBC on a 2017 F150. I just received the OBDLink MX today. I'll try either tonight or tomorrow and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks, mine does not show an IPC module. All I see is the following modules:
APIM
DCDC
PAM
BdyCm
FCIM
TRM

I have the ELM327 with the HS/MS switch. Is yours an XLT?

I couldn't wait! Mine is the XL, but that shouldn't make a difference. The IPC controls the climate control, brake controller and several other things too. One of the videos I watched was an XLT, but a 2015, not sure what Ford changed.

Mine showed two IPC modules, one was "as built" and the other was blank. I used the blank one and found "Trailer Brake Controller" and Trailer Brake Controller Gain Settings." I enabled both of them. Now the TBC works as it should.

Are you looking under the "Configuration and Programming" tab (looks like a microchip)? The IPC is not listed under the "info" tab. Also, you must use the "extended License" version of FORScan, if you're not already. I might make a short video, as the 2017's are slightly different from the 2015 videos I saw.

Yes, in the "Configuration and Programming" tab, mine does not show the IPC module. I have the extended license and HScan/MScan switch. Maybe I should buy the OBDLink MX instead of what I have.

You need an adapter with MS-CAN support to access all of your modules (actually, majority of them are reachable via MS-CAN pins). If you have OBDLink MX BT or ELS27, it should work out of the box. Otherwise, you need to modify your adapter for MS-CAN as described, for example, here: http://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4

Here is a screenshort that illustrates typical configuration for 2017 trucks, red square shows the modules that are only reachable without MS-CAN.

As soon as MS-CAN support is added to the adapter, don't forget to remove vehicle profile in Vehicle->Profiles.

I do have the adapter. I have the ELM327 that has the switch wired just like the description above. It has the switch that changes if from MScan to HScan switched to the 3,6,11,14 pins. I am able to switch between the two in forscan to get the FCIM and TRM modules but I can't get any more. Am I still doing something wrong?

Thanks jshanehood. That video was perfect. I found out my problem was the adapter. I purchased the OBDLink MX which came in last night and was able to see all the modules in the video. I activated the "Trailer Brake Controller" and "Trailer Brake Controller Gain Settings" and now they show up in the info screen.

Hi jshanehood, I too wanted to thank you for the video. I was able to turn on the factory trailer brake so I too get it to come up on my screen, but when I squeeze the trailer brake manually it doesn't show on the screen. The reason I ask is we use the f150 xl for work trucks and they come with trailer brake already installed and when I squeeze the one in the work truck it says something like (no trailer attached). Is there something else I need to do? Thank you Larry
