I have been looking into a wired usb option and have come across:

Or is an adapter with the STN 2120 chip better for about $60 plus shipping?:

Hello,
I am from Poland, I bought and use STN1170, I am very satisfied with the quality of operation. I did not meet with the break of the connection with the car, it works at all available transfer speeds, according to the parameters guaranteed by the manufacturer. I would highly recommend.
I use ELMConfig (only for the brave ones) and FORScan.
